China supports the national leaders of ASEAN to hold a “special meeting” as soon as possible to mediate on the unrest in Myanmar, said Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Wang made the remarks at a joint press conference after his meeting with visiting Malaysian Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein on Thursday in Nanping city, East China’s Fujian Province.

“Myanmar is a member of the ASEAN family, and a close neighbor to China. We all hope different forces in Myanmar can start a dialogue as soon as possible based on the long-term interests of their country, to solve divergence under the framework of the law and the constitution and promote hard-won democratization,” Wang said.

“We all believe the international community should create a good environment for Myanmar’s internal politics based on the principle of noninterference,” rather than meddling in Myanmar’s internal affairs by intervention, Wang noted.

The meeting with the Malaysian foreign minister also focused on a post-pandemic agenda and issues such as vaccine cooperation and trade. The two sides also reached agreements on jointly safeguarding the peace and stability of the South China Sea, and supporting multilateralism.
