Brazil's COVID-19 death toll hits 116,000, with 1,271 daily deaths

Brazil on Tuesday said it registered 1,271 more deaths from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 116,580.

According to the Ministry of Health, the total number of confirmed cases of infection reached 3,669,995, after tests detected 47,134 new cases in the same 24 hours.

Since the onset of the outbreak here, 2,848,395 people have recovered from the virus.

Brazil has the world's second-largest outbreak, after the United States.

The hardest-hit state is southeast Sao Paulo, with 28,912 deaths and 765,670 cases of infection in the past five months, followed by Rio de Janeiro, with 15,560 deaths.

Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are the only states with more than 10,000 deaths.
